What is an ink converter?
While many fountain pens use cartridges for convenience, an ink converter is used to refill fountain pens from a bottle. They usually work via a vaccuum effect: a piston or screw starts at the bottom of the chamber, and as it is drawn up, it pulls the ink into the empty space that is left. 

Using bottled ink means that there is less plastic waste, as these are what ink cartridges are usually made from. As Pilot ink comes in a glass bottle, the bottle can be re-used or recycled, and with 30ml of ink inside, it replaces many plastic cartridges - better for your wallet and the environment!
